I was on the lookout for a media player to take care of my media needs. After all, getting the right kind of multi-media was most important for me as well as my family, given the diverse entertainment needs that we have. I wanted something that could easily integrate various formats and make it possible for me to read these different formats without too much of a hassle. I did try out many of the well known media players, but somehow, these did not come up to my expectations. This is when a friend of mine suggested VLC Media Player. I downloaded it from the net, but to be frank, I was quite skeptical at first about its effectiveness.

To my great surprise I found this media player to be extremely versatile as well as varied in its usage. Not only did I find out that VLC player is portable, it is capable of reading the widest range ever audio and video formats. Now when you have a single player able to play mp2, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, ogg and aac fomats, it is sure that anyone’s mind will get boggled.

Not to take anyone’s word for it, I got CDs of various formats and put the VLC media player to the test. The results were amazing to say the least. The VLC player was able to smoothly play each of the formats with crystal clarity and astounding consistency. Not only CDs, the VLC Player acts like a media converter and can allow various streaming protocols to act without a hitch. We do a lot of work online nowadays, and to be able to just plug and play the VLC media player without any hassles is such a comfort.

I tried the VLC Media Player latest version and was happy to know that the Windows version has got much speeded up as it has an updated complier and also codecs updates. I tried it with the latest IPTV versions as well, and was pleased to note that the trademark quality and reception was not compromised in the least. There is no need to load any special codec, program or codec pack to use the VLC player. All you need to do is download it, and it is ready to go!

I even asked my good online friend Colin (a big movie fan who watches movies on his PC everyday) to try it out.  And here’s his opinion: http://popcornandkola.wordpress.com/2010/02/17/vlc-media-player/

After having used the VLC Media Player, I just had to call up my friend, who had recommended it, and thanked him profusely. I am convinced that as and when audio and video formats will get upgraded, I will be able to download new versions of the VLC player and be able to use it for many years to come.

Hi Nathan! I absolutly agree with you. VLC plays my DVDs so much better than WMP, which is why I have been using it for years. It plays all kinds of media well and does not get in the way.

I’m using VLC more then 3 years. It plays all formats, very clean interface, no additional bloat. For me it’s the best media player available – every PC should have this app installed and configured as the default media player.

I downloaded VLC player after reading your review. I have a digital camera that saves movie files in MOV format and I am trying to play it with VLC player but it doesn’t want to play the sound correctly. Tried with other MOV files but the same result. I’m really dissapointed now. It looks like VLC is not that good as other says.

Sorry Nathan, I have to appologise! I messed up the thing a little. I just realised that I got the error with my old player and not with VLC, my bad. Just testing VLC and this new player works great! Thanks for the recommendation ;)

Hi Rodger! No problem, I’m glad you found my review useful :)

This will play just about everything. If a DVD or file is slugish using another program, VLC will play it as smooth as silk.
This is just about the only program I use any more. I also install it on all the computers I work on.

From my experience there are a few minor quirks, but this vlc media player is lighter on system resources than other players, does not insist on auto-loading when Windows starts, and works on all kinds of media. Much better than having resource hogs like WMP, Real Player, and Quicktime.

Just a heads up – when I first installed VLC, my Anti-Virus for some reason flagged it. Anyway I went ahead ignored my AV and installed the player. Since then it works fine, no system crash or malicious actions so I’m sure it was a false alarm.
